Leader of the Council supports campaign against closure of Hall Green Co-op

John Clancy

Cllr. John Clancy, Leader of Birmingham City Council, has sent this message of support to the campaign for saving Hall Green Co-op.

John Clancy statement:

Your local Labour councillors have brought this distressing news to me this week after being informed by staff working at the Co-Op that they face losing their jobs next month due to proposals to close the store next month. I am familiar with the store as I know it has been a presence in Hall Green for many years and understand how it contributes to the vitality of Hall Green Parade. Like your councillors, I worry about the future viability of the shopping parade if the proposal goes ahead.

I have met with Cllr Bowles and have been briefed on the current issues and have committed to writing to both the CEO Richard Pennycock and the CEO Retail Steve Murrells early next week. I will be asking them to place the decision on hold and undertake a full and comprehensive consultation with local residents so that a better understanding of the contribution that this store makes to both Hall Green Parade and the wider community is made clear.
